Zeiss VR One - Review 2022

Virtual reality headsets have been changing shape over the final few years. On one end are tethered options like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, self-contained display systems that connect to a reckoner. On the other end are mobile phone-based headsets like the Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard devices, which rely entirely on an installed smartphone for both processing and display. Zeiss was in the former camp three years ago with the Cinemizer OLED headset, but it'south switched to the latter with the VR Ane. The $120 VR One is smartphone-make-doubter, but a questionable control omission hurts its usability.

Design

The VR Ane looks and feels similar a simpler, not-Samsung version of the Gear VR. It's a white matte plastic visor with a glossy, transparent front plate. It attaches to your caput with three elastic straps secured past buckles and hook-and-loop fasteners. Two of the straps meet horizontally around the back of your head, and a third connects over the top. The pinnacle strap helps ensure that the headset will stay in place, just similar the Gear VR. Foam padding lines the face mask function of the headset, only unlike the Gear VR, information technology's permanently affixed rather than removable.

While the VR One is slightly larger and heavier than the Gear VR (15.4 ounces to the Gear VR'south eleven.2), it contains none of the electronics present in Samsung's headset. The Gear VR boasts boosted sensors and a touch pad controller on the right, plus a laissez passer-through micro USB connector for keeping your installed telephone charged. The VR One contains only the plastic beat and the Carl Zeiss eyes. Despite the greater weight, it's still comfortable to wear.

Smartphone Trays

Dissimilar the Gear VR and various Google Cardboard devices we've tested, the VR I doesn't use a removable front plate and born smartphone holder to secure your fastened phone. Instead, a smartphone tray slides out of the side of the headset to snugly fit your telephone of choice. The VR One optionally includes a phone-specific tray (for the iPhone half dozen/6s, Samsung Galaxy S5, or Samsung Galaxy S6) for an extra $9. The included Galaxy S5 tray our VR One came with held the phone securely and made the micro USB and headphone ports readily available.
